ترموستات از دو کلمه يوناني ترمو به معناي دما و استات يک معني مشخص شده است. در کل ترموستات به معني داشتن دما و يا کنترل دما بدون اپراتور مي باشد. نحوه کار ترموستات بدين صورت مي شود که ترموستات سرعت پروسه را توسط کاربر خروجي خود را کنترل مي کند و با توجه به سنسور تشخيص مي دهد.
سنسور دما وسيله اي است که براي اندازه گيري دما استفاده مي شود. اين مي تواند دماي هوا، دماي مايع يا دماي ماده جامد باشد. انواع مختلفي از سنسورهاي دما در دسترس هستند و هر کدام از فناوري‌ها و اصول متفاوتي براي اندازه‌گيري دما استفاده مي‌کنند.
